The Australia Day Aquathon has a proud and strong history. Beginning with the inaugural 2000 (Nov,1999 was actually the first 'Illawarra aquathon' ) that attracted 250 participants, this fun swim and run has grown to be an Illawarra iconic event. One that draws a huge response across the wider age groups from children to those well in their senior years, from hundreds of locals and visitors whom travel far and wide, and from the very first timer to the elite athletes. The event continues to grow in popularity, and 2013 drew a record 2050 participants, over 120 volunteers and thousands of spectators. The event continues to add value factor and appeal, has a strong sense of ensuring it is welcoming and inclusive, and that prides itself on delivering a true community event.
Since inception the event has assisted in raising nearly $200,000 for charity partners as Anglicare, Light House Church, and non for profits as local surf and running clubs. The reach extends to local based community projects, and in services that are for the community. It goes beyond the fund raising with awareness of the projects, for the increase of visitors, to attracting international elite athletes, to the hundreds of families enjoying a healthy and active family and team bonding experience. The Australia Day Aquathon has hundreds of amazing stories, and continues to strive to bring a safe, fun and fresh approach that is welcoming for everyone.
Over the years, as Australia Day Aquathon has grown and matured, bringing many new safety and participant initiatives and site changes. The event main site has grown from a natural grass harbour foreshore, to a multimillion dolllar foreshore renovation including the area around North Wollongong Beach, the 'blue mile cyclepath' and Belmore Basin foreshore with more to come. The event has added numerous initiatives as three event distances that appeal to all fitness types, to parents able to join in and support their little one's in the Kids Aquafun, to the 2013 new and popular 'Walk for Charity', loads of safety and professional service enhancements, hundreds of thousands of dollar value of amazing prizes, offers, and give away's. From celebrity participants, to over 150 international visitors of which 10 include Olympic Athletes...to the physically challenged, first timer, the six year old to our eldest over 80...and loads in between.
We are thrilled that the Aquathon is acclaimed as the premier and friendliest Aquathon in the country, the largest swim and run event and an event that draws a sense of fun, community and embraces all whom share the unique event.
Working tirelessly with our partners the Australia Day Aquathon and community walk looks to welcome in another era of swim, run, walk and fun for all!
